Islanders asked for views on Deposit Return Scheme

Zero Waste Scotland is holding events on Islay and Bute to talk about the introduction of Scotland鈥檚 Deposit Return Scheme.

The organisation is keen to find out how people feel the scheme will work on islands and the impact it might have.

The first event will be at the Machrie Hotel and Golf Links, Islay, on 22 October, between 10am and 1pm.

The event on Bute will be held at the Victoria Hotel, Rothesay, from 10am to 1pm on 28 October.

Scotland will soon be the first part of the UK to introduce a deposit return scheme for beverages containers. It will be available across all of Scotland and will encourage everyone to recycle their used bottles and cans, including all drinks sold in PET plastic, metal and glass. People pay a small deposit of 20p when they buy a drink in a single-use container and then get the deposit back when they return the empty bottle or can to a participating retailer or deposit point.

The regulations for Scotland鈥檚 Deposit Return Scheme were laid before parliament on the 10 September 2019. There is a consultation on the regulations underway which closes on 10 December 20 19. This link takes you to the regulations:

Councillor Robin Currie, Policy Lead for Housing, Roads and Infrastructure Services, said: 鈥淚f you can spare the time, I would encourage you to go along to one of the events.

鈥淩epresentatives of Zero Waste Scotland will talk about the level of deposit, obligations on producers and retailers, return points and timelines of key events and publications. These will all impact on island communities and businesses and this is our chance to make our voices heard.鈥
