Creating a safer route for young people to cycle, walk or scoot to school is a key ambition for the people of Rothesay.
Rothesay鈥檚 New School Run is an exciting and ambitious design project to define what changes are needed, post-pandemic, to allow young people in Rothesay to get to school differently. Whether that鈥檚 cycling, walking or scooting.
High Street and Townhead are amongst the most used roads in Rothesay 鈥 especially by pupils and staff travelling to the Joint Campus each day. The park, leisure centre, health centre, hospital and workplaces all make this an important route for the people of the town.
Following a public consultation earlier in the year, new proposals outlining what changes are needed can now be viewed.
The proposals include:
- Reducing road widths where possible to give pedestrians more space
- Widening pavements
- Reconfiguring road junctions, additional crossing points and dropped kerbs
- Measures to prevent illegal parking
- Measures to encourage drivers to slow down including; carriageway surfacing, lighting, trees, seats and planters
What do you think?
In order to inform the next stage of the project, please comment on the proposals either online at or in person at Rothesay Library or the leisure centre. Please respond by 14 October 2021.
You can also join the design team on a Walk and Talk event on Wednesday 6 October. A member of the team will walk along High Street and Townhead and can chat through the proposed changes at different sections of the route. If you would like to join the walk, book a space at .
Councillor Robin Currie, Leader of P站色情片:
鈥淭he proposals to create a safer route will not only benefit pupils but it will actively encourage the wider community to leave the car at home, reduce their carbon footprint and explore more active travel options.鈥
Laura Scott-Simmons, Lead Designer, Ice Cream Architects:
"We know from asking them that more pupils at the Joint Campus would like to walk, scoot or cycle to school. Making it easier and safer to walk, scoot or cycle to school along the High Street and Townhead will also help people of all ages to get to the park, the leisure centre, the health centre, hospital and workplaces. It should also ease traffic congestion around Townhead. In other words, what鈥檚 good for the school will be good for the whole community."
The next stage of the project is to progress the designs and secure funding. The project is being promoted by P站色情片 and is funded by Transport Scotland鈥檚 Places for Everyone programme administered by Sustrans.
