Help for Children and Young People

Welcome to your page which is full of information about what to do if you’re worried about yourself or others being harmed.

I have to look after my mum or dad and I can't cope

Children should never be expected to do as much caring as adults.  Adults should not rely on the caring abilities of a child.  Helping your parents or relatives can be very positive for young people but caring for a relative who is unwell or disabled is really hard work. If they have drug or alcohol problems it can be hard too. Without any help ‘caring’ can be very stressful. Young carers can be affected by all the responsibility they have.

They are affected by

  • Being tired
  • Worrying all the time
  • Coping with problems
  • Not having time for schoolwork
  • Having no time to relax
  • Feeling embarrassed
  • Feeling angry
  • Feel guilty

If you are being affected like this, talk to someone you trust who can help you. Social Work organise help and support for young carers. They can get you time out for yourself. They will help you cope and feel better about things.

If your worried that asking for help might get your Mum or Dad into trouble, or you will be taken away from home because you are not getting looked after properly, or a . They will talk everything through with you and help you work out what to do next.
